Convert frequency in Hertz (Hz) to musical notes on the standard 12-tone equal temperament scale
Learn how to use the Hertz to Note Calculator calculator and its working principles
This calculator uses the standard 12-tone equal temperament scale, where each octave doubles the frequency of the note below it. The formula used is:
Note = 440 Hz × 2(n/12)
Where n is the number of semitones away from the reference note (A4 = 440 Hz, which is assigned MIDI note number 69). By calculating the logarithm of the ratio between the input frequency and the reference frequency, we can determine how many semitones away the note is from A4.
If you enter 440 Hz, the calculator will show that it corresponds to A4 (MIDI note 69). If you enter 880 Hz, it will show A5 (MIDI note 81), which is one octave higher.
