Speed of Sound Calculator Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Speed of Sound Calculator calculator and its working principles

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). The default is 20°C, which is room temperature.
  2. Enter the altitude in meters (m). The default is 0m (sea level). Altitude affects the speed of sound as air pressure decreases with height.
  3. Enter the humidity percentage (%). The default is 50%. Humidity affects the speed of sound because water vapor is less dense than dry air.
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the speed of sound.
  5. Click "Reset" to clear all inputs and start over.

Working Principle

The speed of sound in air depends primarily on temperature, humidity, and altitude. The formula used in this calculator is:

v = 331.3 + 0.606 × T + 0.0124 × H - 0.000094 × A

Where:

  • v is the speed of sound in meters per second (m/s)
  • T is the temperature in degrees Celsius (°C)
  • H is the humidity percentage (%)
  • A is the altitude in meters (m)

This formula accounts for the fact that sound travels faster in warmer air, slightly faster in more humid air, and slightly slower at higher altitudes due to lower air pressure.

Example Calculation

If you enter a temperature of 25°C, altitude of 1000m, and humidity of 60%, the calculator will show that the speed of sound is approximately 343.1 m/s.
