For small breeds:
16 + 4 × (dog age - 0.5)

For medium breeds:
15 + 4 × (dog age - 0.5)

For large breeds:
13 + 4 × (dog age - 0.5)

For giant breeds:
12 + 4 × (dog age - 0.5)

Where:
dog age is the age of your dog in human years

Understanding Dog Aging

Dogs don't age at the same rate as humans. The first year of a dog's life is equivalent to about 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 human years, and each subsequent year adds about 4 human years. This calculator uses the Purina Pet Institute formula, which adjusts this basic calculation based on the dog's size to provide a more accurate estimate.

Breed-Specific Aging

  • Small Breeds: Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Dachshunds - These breeds tend to live longer and mature faster.
  • Medium Breeds: Beagles, Border Collies, Corgis - These breeds age at a moderate rate.

  • Giant Breeds: Great Danes, St. Bernards, Mastiffs - These breeds have a shorter lifespan and mature more slowly.
