Understanding Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac is a system of assigning an animal and element to each year in a 12-year cycle. There are 12 animals and 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), creating a 60-year cycle.

Animal Signs

The 12 animals in order are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

Elemental Associations

Each animal sign is associated with one of the five elements, which rotate in a cycle:

• Wood (1, 6): Rat, Tiger
• Fire (2, 7): Ox, Rabbit
• Earth (3, 8): Dragon, Goat
• Metal (4, 9): Snake, Rooster
• Water (5, 10): Horse, Dog
• Year element is determined by (year - 4) % 10.

Example

If you were born in 1990 (the Year of the Horse), your zodiac sign is Horse, and your element is Metal.
