Understanding Defensive Rating

Defensive Rating (DR) is a measure of a team's defensive efficiency. It represents the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions. The formula is:

DR = (Points Allowed × 100) / Possessions

A lower Defensive Rating indicates a better defensive performance. The league average Defensive Rating typically ranges from 105 to 115.

Example Calculation

If a team allows 90 points in 80 possessions, its Defensive Rating would be:

DR = (90 × 100) / 80 = 112.50

This would be considered an average defense based on the interpretation scale provided in the calculator.

Important Notes

  • Ensure you're using data from the same time period for points allowed and possessions
  • Defensive Rating is most meaningful when comparing teams or tracking a team's performance over time
  • This calculator uses the standard NBA formula for Defensive Rating
