Calculate the sugar content and sweetness level of sugar sweetened beverages based on volume and sugar concentration.
Learn how to use the calculator to determine sugar content and sweetness levels in beverages
Sweetness Level (°Bx): This measures the sugar concentration in the beverage. A higher °Bx value indicates a sweeter beverage. For reference, water has a °Bx of 0, while typical fruit juices range from 10-15 °Bx, and sodas are often around 40-50 °Bx.
Sugar Density (g/ml): This shows how much sugar is present in each milliliter of the beverage.
Sweetness Category: Provides a qualitative assessment of the sweetness level (Light, Medium, High, or Very High).
The calculator uses the Brix scale, which is a measure of sugar content in a liquid. One degree Brix (°Bx) represents 1 gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution at 20°C. The formula used is:
Sweetness Level (°Bx) = (Sugar Content × 100) / Beverage Volume
If you have a 250 ml soda that contains 30 grams of sugar, the calculation would be:
Sweetness Level = (30 g × 100) / 250 ml = 12 °Bx
This would be classified as a Medium sweetness level.
