Calculation Formula

Energy (kJ) = Muscle Mass (kg) × Glycogen Concentration (g/kg) × 17.57

Where:
Muscle Mass (kg): The mass of the muscle being considered.
Glycogen Concentration (g/kg): The amount of glycogen stored per kilogram of muscle.
17.57: The energy value of 1 gram of glycogen in kJ.

Learn how to use the Muscle Glycogen Energy Calculator calculator and its working principles

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the muscle mass in kilograms (kg) in the "Muscle Mass" field.
  2. Enter the glycogen concentration in grams per kilogram of muscle (g/kg) in the "Glycogen Concentration" field.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the total energy available from muscle glycogen stores.
  4. The result will be displayed in kilojoules (kJ).

Understanding the Calculation

The calculator uses the following formula to estimate the energy available from muscle glycogen:

Energy (kJ) = Muscle Mass (kg) × Glycogen Concentration (g/kg) × 17.57

This formula multiplies the muscle mass by the glycogen concentration to determine the total amount of glycogen in grams, and then multiplies by 17.57 to convert the glycogen mass to energy in kilojoules. The value of 17.57 kJ/g is the approximate energy content of glycogen.

Example

If you have a muscle mass of 30 kg with a glycogen concentration of 80 g/kg, the calculation would be:

Energy = 30 kg × 80 g/kg × 17.57 kJ/g = 42,024 kJ

This means that there are approximately 42,024 kJ of energy available from the muscle glycogen stores.
