Motor Capacity Calculator

Motor Capacity Calculator calculator can be used to determine the apparent power (kVA) of a motor based on its power output (kW) and efficiency. This is useful for electrical engineers and technicians who need to size electrical components for motor applications.

Calculation Formula

Motor Capacity (kVA) = Power (kW) / Efficiency (%)

Where:
Power (kW): The actual power output of the motor
Efficiency (%): The efficiency of the motor as a percentage
Motor Capacity (kVA): The apparent power required for the motor

Motor Capacity Calculator Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Motor Capacity Calculator calculator and its working principles

How to Use

  1. Enter the power output of your motor in kilowatts (kW). This is typically found on the motor's nameplate.
  2. Enter the efficiency of your motor as a percentage. This is also typically found on the motor's nameplate.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the motor capacity in kVA.
  4. The result will be displayed in the "Motor Capacity (kVA)" field.

Working Principle

The apparent power (kVA) required for a motor is calculated by dividing the actual power output (kW) by the motor's efficiency. This is because electrical motors are not 100% efficient - some energy is lost as heat during operation.

Example

Suppose you have a motor with a power output of 15 kW and an efficiency of 85%. To calculate the motor capacity:

Motor Capacity (kVA) = 15 kW / (85 / 100) = 17.65 kVA

Applications

This calculator is useful for:

  • Electrical engineers sizing transformers and circuit breakers for motor loads
  • Technicians selecting appropriate wire gauges for motor circuits
  • Designing electrical systems for industrial applications
