Understanding speech rate

Speech rate is typically measured in words per minute (WPM). A normal speech rate for conversational English is between 140-180 WPM. Public speakers and radio hosts often speak slower (120-150 WPM) for better comprehension, while newsreaders might speak faster (180-220 WPM).

Practical applications

  • Assessing speaking speed for public speaking practice
  • Improving pronunciation and fluency
  • Measuring speech rate in different languages
  • Identifying speech patterns in recorded speeches

Example calculation

If you spoke 100 words in 30 seconds, your speech rate would be calculated as follows:

WPM = (100 words × 60 seconds/minute) / 30 seconds = 200 WPM
