How to Use the Calculator

Understanding Protein Molarity

Molarity (M) is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. For proteins, it represents the concentration of protein in your solution.

Calculation Formula

The calculator uses the following formulas:

  • Moles of Protein = Mass (g) / Molecular Weight (g/mol)
  • Molarity (M) = Moles of Protein / Volume (L)
  • Concentration (g/L) = Molarity (M) × Molecular Weight (g/mol)

Example

Suppose you have 10 grams of a protein with a molecular weight of 50 kDa dissolved in 500 mL of solution:

  1. Moles of protein = 10 g / (50 × 1000 g/mol) = 0.0002 mol
  2. Volume in liters = 500 mL / 1000 = 0.5 L
  3. Molarity = 0.0002 mol / 0.5 L = 0.0004 M (or 0.4 mM)
  4. Concentration = 0.0004 M × 50,000 g/mol = 20 g/L

Note: Always ensure consistent units in your calculations. The molecular weight should be in g/mol if mass is in grams, and volume in liters for molarity in M (mol/L).
