Calculation Formula

Slope = Rise / Run

Where:
Rise is the vertical height of the deck in inches
Run is the horizontal distance of the deck in feet

How to Use the Deck Slope Calculator

  1. Enter the vertical rise of your deck in inches in the "Rise" field.
  2. Enter the horizontal run of your deck in feet in the "Run" field.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the slope.
  4. The calculator will display the slope in three formats:
    • Decimal format (Rise / (Run × 12))
    • Slope percentage (Decimal × 100)
    • Slope ratio (Rise:Run)

Understanding Deck Slope

A proper deck slope is essential for drainage to prevent water accumulation that can lead to rot, mold, and structural damage.

The standard recommended slope for a deck is between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch per foot of run (0.25% to 0.5%). This provides sufficient drainage while remaining subtle in appearance.

Example Calculation

If your deck has a rise of 6 inches over a run of 12 feet:

  • Slope Decimal: 6 / (12 × 12) = 0.0417
  • Slope Percentage: 0.0417 × 100 = 4.17%
  • Slope Ratio: 6:12 (which simplifies to 1:2)
