How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the material density in pounds per cubic foot. Common materials:
    • Concrete: ~150-160 lbs/cu ft
    • Gravel: ~100-110 lbs/cu ft
    • Soil (dry): ~80-100 lbs/cu ft
    • Wood (dry): ~30-50 lbs/cu ft
    • Steel: ~490 lbs/cu ft
  2. Enter the length of the area in feet
  3. Enter the width of the area in feet

Understanding the calculation

The calculator uses the formula: Weight per square foot = (Density × Length × Width) / (Length × Width). Since Length × Width cancels out in the denominator, the result equals the material density. This is because we're essentially calculating how much material is in each square foot.

Example calculation

If you have a concrete patio that measures 10 feet by 8 feet with a density of 150 lbs/cu ft:
Weight per square foot = 150 lbs/cu ft = 150 lbs/sq ft
