Learn how to use the AC to DC conversion calculator calculator and its working principles

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the RMS AC Voltage (Vrms) in volts. This is the effective value of the AC voltage.
  2. Enter the Rectifier Efficiency in percentage. This is the efficiency of the rectifier used to convert AC to DC.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the DC Voltage (Vdc).
  4. The result will be displayed in the DC Voltage field.

Working Principle

The calculator uses the formula:

DC Voltage (Vdc) = Vrms * √2 * (η/100)

Where:

  • Vrms is the RMS (Root Mean Square) value of the AC voltage.
  • √2 is the square root of 2, approximately 1.4142.
  • η is the rectifier efficiency in percentage.

This formula accounts for the fact that the DC output from a rectifier is not a perfect DC value but has ripples. The efficiency factor adjusts the calculation based on how effectively the rectifier converts AC to DC.

Example

If you have an AC voltage of 120V RMS and a rectifier with 90% efficiency, the DC voltage would be:

DC Voltage (Vdc) = 120 * 1.4142 * (90/100) ≈ 151.74V
