Convert FM radio frequencies (in MHz) to their corresponding channel numbers based on the North American FM band allocation.
Learn how to use the Frequency to FM Channel Number Converter calculator and its working principles
In North America, FM radio channels are assigned based on their center frequencies. The formula used in this calculator is based on the following relationship:
Channel Number = (Frequency in MHz - 88) × 2
This formula works because the FM band from 88 to 108 MHz spans 20 MHz, and each channel is allocated 200 kHz (0.2 MHz) with 200 kHz guard bands between channels. Therefore, each channel number represents approximately 0.2 MHz above the previous channel.
If you enter 95.5 MHz, the calculator will show channel number 53, because:
(95.5 - 88) × 2 = 7.5 × 2 = 15
Here's a table showing some common FM frequencies and their corresponding channel numbers:
Frequency (MHz) | Channel Number |
---|---|
88.1 | 0 |
89.9 | 10 |
91.9 | 20 |
95.5 | 53 |
98.3 | 70 |
107.9 | 155 |
