How to Use the Calculator

1. Enter the area you want to cover in square feet (sq ft). This is the length and width of the area multiplied together.
2. Enter the desired depth of mulch in inches. A common depth for mulch is 3 inches.
3. Click the "Calculate" button. The calculator will determine the number of bags of mulch you need.
4. The result will be displayed as the number of bags required. This is rounded up to the nearest whole number since you can't buy a fraction of a bag.

Understanding the Formula

The calculator uses the following formula to determine the number of bags needed:

Number of Bags = (Area × Depth) / Volume per Bag

Where:
Area = Area to be covered in square feet
Depth = Mulch depth in inches
Volume per Bag = Volume of one bag of mulch (typically 1 cubic foot)

Example

If you want to cover an area of 100 square feet with a mulch depth of 3 inches, the calculation would be:

Number of Bags = (100 sq ft × 3 inches) / 1 cubic foot = 300 cubic inches / 1 cubic foot = 25 bags
