General Guidelines

Most white rice types need about 1.5 cups of water per cup of rice. Brown rice generally needs about 2 cups of water per cup of rice.

Calculation Formula

Water = Rice × Ratio

Where:
- Rice is the amount of uncooked rice in cups
- Ratio is the recommended water to rice ratio (e.g., 1.5 for white rice)

  5. The calculator will display the water needed in cups, the water-to-rice ratio, and an approximate amount in milliliters.

Rice Water Ratios Explained

The water-to-rice ratio is the key to perfectly cooked rice. It determines how moist the final dish will be. Here are some general guidelines:

  • White Rice: Typically needs a 1.5:1 ratio (1.5 cups of water per cup of rice). This results in fluffy, separate grains.
  • Brown Rice: Absorbs more water, so a 2:1 ratio (2 cups of water per cup of rice) is usually recommended for tender, chewy texture.
  • Arborio (for Risotto): Uses a higher water ratio (1.8:1) and requires constant stirring during cooking for a creamy texture.
  • Basmati and Jasmine: Similar to white rice, around 1.5:1 ratio works well for these long-grain varieties.
  • Wild Rice: Similar to brown rice, requires about 2:1 ratio for proper cooking.

Factors Affecting Cooking

Keep in mind that these ratios are approximate and may need adjustment based on:

  • Quality and age of rice
  • Altitude and atmospheric pressure
  • Type of cooking pot (e.g., aluminum, stainless steel, electric rice cooker)
  • Personal preference for rice texture (more water for softer rice, less water for drier rice)

Example Usage

If you want to cook 2 cups of Jasmine rice:

  1. Select "Jasmine" from the rice type dropdown.
  2. Enter "2" in the amount of rice field.
  3. Click "Calculate".
  4. The calculator will show you need approximately 3 cups of water (1.5:1 ratio) and 720 ml.
