Understanding Board Feet

Board feet is a unit of measurement for lumber. One board foot is equal to 1 foot long, 1 inch wide, and 1 inch thick. To calculate the total price, you multiply the number of board feet by the price per board foot.

Example

If you have a piece of lumber that is 10 feet long, 6 inches wide, and 2 inches thick, and the price per board foot is $5, the total price would be:

10 feet * 6 inches * 2 inches / 144 = 0.833 board feet

0.833 board feet * $5/board foot = $4.17
