How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total number of miles you plan to drive
- Input your vehicle's fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (MPG)
- Enter the current price of fuel per gallon in your area
- Click the "Calculate" button to see your estimated fuel cost
- The calculator will also show approximately how many gallons of fuel you'll need
Understanding the Calculation
This calculator uses a simple formula to estimate fuel costs:
Total Cost = Miles Driven / MPG × Price per Gallon
For example, if you drive 300 miles in a car that gets 25 MPG and fuel costs $3.50 per gallon, your estimated cost would be:
300 miles ÷ 25 MPG × $3.50/gallon = $42.00
Tips for Accurate Results
- Use your vehicle's actual MPG rating if available
- Consider adjusting your MPG based on driving conditions (city vs. highway)
- Check current fuel prices in your area for more accurate estimates
- For longer trips, consider adding stops for fuel to avoid calculation inaccuracies
