Calculation Formula

Total Fuel = Flow Rate × Time

Where:
- Flow Rate: Amount of fuel consumed per minute (L/min)
- Time: Duration the engine is idling (minutes)
- Fuel Density: Mass of fuel per liter (kg/L)

Idle Fuel Consumption Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the calculator to estimate fuel consumption when an engine is idling

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Fuel Flow Rate in liters per minute (L/min). This can typically be found in your vehicle's technical specifications or measured with a fuel flow meter.
  2. Enter the Idling Time in minutes. Measure how long the engine has been running at idle.
  3. Optionally, enter the Fuel Density if you want to calculate the mass of fuel consumed (default is 0.75 kg/L for petrol).
  4. Click the Calculate button to see the total fuel consumed in both liters and kilograms.
  5. You can enter an optional fuel cost per liter to see an estimate of the cost of the fuel consumed during idling.

When to Use This Calculator

This calculator is useful for:

  • Estimating fuel waste during long idling periods (e.g., waiting in traffic, remote work sites)
  • Understanding your vehicle's fuel consumption patterns
  • Comparing different vehicles' idling consumption
  • Estimating costs of fuel wasted during idling

Example Calculation

If a vehicle has a fuel flow rate of 0.2 L/min while idling for 30 minutes:

  • Total fuel consumed = 0.2 L/min × 30 min = 6.0 Liters
  • Total fuel mass = 6.0 L × 0.75 kg/L = 4.5 kg
