What is Faraday's Law of Induction?

Faraday's Law of Induction states that the electromotive force (EMF) or voltage induced in a circuit is directly proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux through the circuit. It is one of the fundamental principles of electromagnetism.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the change in magnetic flux (ΔΦ) in Weber (Wb). This represents the change in magnetic field passing through the circuit.
  2. Enter the time interval (Δt) during which this change occurs in seconds (s).
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the induced EMF.
  4. The calculator will display the induced EMF in Volts (V) based on the formula: EMF = -ΔΦ / Δt.

Working Principle

The negative sign in Faraday's Law indicates the direction of the induced EMF, according to Lenz's Law. When the magnetic flux through a circuit changes, an EMF is induced in the circuit that opposes the change in flux. The magnitude of this EMF depends on how quickly the magnetic flux changes.

Applications

Faraday's Law of Induction has numerous practical applications, including:

  • Transformers - used to step up or step down AC voltages
  • Generators - convert mechanical energy to electrical energy
  • Induction cooktops - heat cooking vessels through magnetic fields
  • Synchronous motors - convert electrical energy to mechanical energy

Note: The calculator assumes a simple case where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the circuit. For more complex scenarios, additional factors such as the area of the circuit and the angle between the magnetic field and the circuit may need to be considered.
