Understanding Amplifier Efficiency

Amplifier efficiency is a measure of how effectively an amplifier converts input power to output power. It is expressed as a percentage and calculated as:

Efficiency (η) = (Pout / Pin) × 100%

In this formula:

  • Pout is the useful power delivered to the load (e.g., speaker).
  • Pin is the total power supplied to the amplifier.

A higher efficiency means less power is wasted as heat, which is particularly important in battery-powered devices like mobile phones and portable audio systems.

Example Calculation

Suppose an amplifier has an output power of 50 watts and requires an input power of 100 watts:

Efficiency = (50 W / 100 W) × 100% = 50%

This means the amplifier is 50% efficient, with 50% of the input power being converted to useful output power and the remaining 50% being dissipated as heat.
