Understanding Three Phase Systems

In three-phase electrical systems, power is transmitted more efficiently than in single-phase systems. There are two common configurations:

  • Wye (Y) Connection: Three phase wires plus a neutral wire. The line current is equal to the phase current.
  • Delta (Δ) Connection: Three phase wires forming a triangle. The line current is √3 times the phase current.

Example Application

Suppose you have a 50 kW three-phase motor operating at 440V with a power factor of 0.85, connected in a Delta configuration. The calculation would be:

Power (W) = 50 kW × 1000 = 50,000 W
Line Current (ILine) = 50,000 / (440 × √3 × 0.85) ≈ 81.25 A
Phase Current (IPhase) = 81.25 / √3 ≈ 47.25 A
