Calculation Formula

Salt Needed (lbs) = Water Hardness (gpg) × Volume (gallons) × Usage Rate (lbs/gallon)

Where:
- Water Hardness (gpg): Grains per gallon of water hardness
- Volume (gallons): Total volume of water to be treated
- Usage Rate (lbs/gallon): Desired amount of salt per gallon of water

Learn how to use the Water Softener Salt Usage Calculator and its working principles

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the water hardness in grains per gallon (gpg). This measures the amount of minerals causing hardness in your water.
  2. Input the volume of water you want to be treated in gallons.
  3. Specify the desired salt usage rate in pounds per gallon (lbs/gallon). This depends on your water softener's recommendations and local water conditions.
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to determine the amount of salt needed.

Understanding Water Hardness

Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg). Common water hardness levels:

  • Soft: 0-3 gpg
  • Moderately Hard: 3-7 gpg
  • Hard: 7-10 gpg
  • Very Hard: 10+ gpg

Example Calculation

If your water hardness is 8 gpg, you want to treat 2000 gallons of water, and your desired salt usage rate is 0.4 lbs/gallon:

Salt Needed = 8 gpg × 2000 gallons × 0.4 lbs/gallon = 640 lbs
