How to use the calculator
- Enter the weight of your whole turkey in pounds
- Select whether your turkey is bone-in or boneless
- Adjust the carving loss percentage (typically 20-30% for experienced carvers)
- Click "Calculate" to see your estimated meat yield
- Use the serving size calculator to determine if your turkey will feed your guests
Understanding Yield Percentages
The calculator uses estimated yield percentages based on turkey weight:
- 0-12 lbs: 65% yield (smaller turkeys have higher usable meat)
- 12-24 lbs: 63% yield
- 24+ lbs: 60% yield (larger turkeys have more bone relative to meat)
Factors Affecting Yield
Several factors can affect your actual meat yield:
- Butchering skill: More experienced carvers typically achieve less carving loss
- Age of turkey: Younger turkeys generally have more meat
- Butchering method: Different carving techniques may result in slightly different yields
- Freezing/thawing: Properly thawed turkeys allow for cleaner carving
Feeding Guide
As a general guide:
- 1 lb of turkey meat serves approximately 3-4 people
- Plan for 10-15% more than your expected number of guests
- Remember to account for other dishes when determining your turkey size
