Cone Surface Area Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Cone Surface Area Calculator and its working principles

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the radius (r) of the cone's base. This is the distance from the center of the base to its edge.
  2. Enter the height (h) of the cone, which is the perpendicular distance from the base to the apex (tip) of the cone.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the surface area.
  4. The calculator will display the base area, lateral surface area, and total surface area.

Understanding the Formula

The surface area of a cone consists of two parts:

  • Base Area: The area of the circular base is calculated as π × r²
  • Lateral Surface Area: The area of the cone's side is calculated as π × r × l, where l is the slant height

The total surface area is the sum of the base area and the lateral surface area.

Example

If a cone has a radius of 5 cm and a height of 12 cm:

Base Area = π × 5² = 78.54 cm²

Slant Height = √(5² + 12²) = √169 = 13 cm

Lateral Surface Area = π × 5 × 13 = 204.2 cm²

Total Surface Area = 78.54 + 204.2 = 282.74 cm²
