Fence post distance calculator Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Fence post distance calculator and its working principles

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the total length of your fence in feet in the "Fence Length" field.
  2. Enter the desired distance between fence posts in the "Post Spacing" field. Common spacings include 6 feet, 8 feet, or 10 feet.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button to determine the number of fence posts needed.
  4. The calculator will automatically round up to the nearest whole number since you can't have a fraction of a fence post.

Important considerations

  • The calculation includes the post at the beginning and the post at the end of the fence.
  • The number of posts needed is always one more than the number of spaces between them.
  • For example, if you have a 100-foot fence with 10-foot spacing, you will need 11 posts (10 spaces between 11 posts).
  • Consider adding an extra post at any corners or gates in your fence.

Formula explanation

The formula used is: Number of posts = (Fence Length / Post Spacing) + 1

This accounts for the initial post and adds one more post for each section of fence at the specified spacing.
