Calculation Formula

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Where:
Length: The length of the area in meters
Width: The width of the area in meters
Depth: The depth of gravel in meters

Gravel Volume Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Gravel Volume Calculator and estimate gravel needs for your project

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the length of your project area in meters.
  2. Enter the width of your project area in meters.
  3. Enter the desired depth of gravel in meters.
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to get your results.

Understanding the Results

  • Volume: The total volume of gravel needed in cubic meters (m³).
  • Approximate weight: An estimate of the total weight of gravel needed in tonnes. This is calculated assuming an average density of 1.5 tonnes per cubic meter for gravel.
  • Approximate bags: An estimate of the number of 25kg bags needed to complete your project.

Principle Behind the Calculation

The calculator uses the formula:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

This gives you the total volume of space that needs to be filled with gravel. The weight is then estimated by multiplying the volume by a typical density of gravel (1.5 tonnes per cubic meter), and the number of bags is calculated by dividing the total weight by the weight of one bag (25kg).

Example

For a garden bed that is 5 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 0.1 meters (10 cm) deep:

  • Volume = 5 m × 2 m × 0.1 m = 1.0 m³
  • Weight ≈ 1.0 m³ × 1.5 tonnes/m³ = 1.5 tonnes
  • Bags ≈ 1.5 tonnes ÷ 0.025 tonnes/bag = 60 bags

Note: These are approximate values. Actual requirements may vary based on the specific type of gravel used and how it's compacted.
