How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the area of your garden or landscape project in square feet.
- Specify the desired depth of mulch in inches. A typical mulch layer is 2-3 inches deep.
- Select the type of mulch you plan to use from the dropdown menu.
- Click the "Calculate" button to determine the estimated weight of mulch needed and the number of bags required.
Understanding the Results
The calculator provides two key results:
- Estimated Weight: The total weight of mulch needed in pounds.
- Estimated Bag Quantity: The number of 2 cubic foot bags you'll need to purchase.
Calculation Formula
The calculator uses the following formula to determine the weight of mulch:
Weight (lbs) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 × Density (lbs/cu ft)
The density value varies by mulch type, representing the weight of one cubic foot of the material. For example, cypress mulch is denser than perlite, so you'll need less volume (but the same weight) for the same coverage.
Important Notes
- This calculator provides estimates. Actual weight may vary slightly based on moisture content and compaction.
- Always purchase a little extra mulch to account for waste or uneven coverage.
- The calculator assumes standard 2 cubic foot bags of mulch.
