Understanding the Results

The calculator provides three key ratios:

  • Population Adverse Impact Ratio: The proportion of unfavorable candidates in the general population.
  • Applicant Adverse Impact Ratio: The proportion of unfavorable candidates among applicants.
  • Protected Group Adverse Impact Ratio: The proportion of unfavorable candidates in the protected group.

Adverse Impact Principle

Adverse impact occurs when a selection process results in a significantly lower proportion of members from a protected group being selected compared to their representation in the relevant labor market.

The calculator uses a common statistical standard where a protected group adverse impact ratio less than 0.80 (or 80%) indicates adverse impact. This means that if 80% or fewer of the protected group is selected compared to their representation in the applicant pool, adverse impact is indicated.
