About the American Wire Gauge (AWG) System

The American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a standard system for specifying the diameter of round, solid, non-ferrous, electrically conducting wire. The AWG system is based on the number of times the wire is drawn through a die to reduce its diameter.

The relationship between AWG number and diameter is logarithmic. As the AWG number increases, the diameter decreases. For example, AWG 0 wire has a diameter of approximately 0.3249 mm, while AWG 40 wire has a diameter of approximately 0.0714 mm.
