Horizontal Projectile Motion Calculator

Calculate the horizontal projectile motion parameters including range, time of flight, and impact velocity.

Input Parameters

Note: For horizontal projectile motion, this should be 0 degrees

Calculation Formula

Range (R) = (v₀² × sin(2θ)) / g for non-zero angles, or R = (v₀ × √(2h/g)) for horizontal motion from height h

Where:
v₀ = Initial velocity
θ = Launch angle
g = Acceleration due to gravity
h = Initial height

Horizontal Projectile Motion Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Horizontal Projectile Motion Calculator and understand its working principles

What is Horizontal Projectile Motion?

Horizontal projectile motion occurs when an object is launched horizontally (with an initial angle of 0 degrees) and moves under the influence of gravity alone. In this type of motion:

  • The horizontal component of velocity remains constant throughout the motion
  • The vertical component of velocity changes due to gravity
  • The object follows a parabolic path

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the initial velocity of the projectile in meters per second (m/s)
  2. For horizontal projectile motion, set the launch angle to 0 degrees
  3. Enter the initial height from which the object is launched in meters (m)
  4. Enter the acceleration due to gravity (standard value is 9.81 m/s²)
  5. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the motion parameters

Understanding the Results

The calculator provides the following key parameters:

  • Time of Flight (t): The total time the object is in the air
  • Horizontal Range (R): The horizontal distance traveled by the object
  • Impact Velocity (V): The magnitude of velocity when the object hits the ground
  • Impact Angle (α): The angle at which the object hits the ground

Example

Suppose a ball is launched horizontally from a height of 5 meters with an initial velocity of 10 m/s. Assuming gravity is 9.81 m/s²:

Time of Flight = √(2 × 5 m / 9.81 m/s²) ≈ 1.01 seconds

Horizontal Range = 10 m/s × 1.01 s ≈ 10.1 meters

Impact Velocity ≈ 11.94 m/s

Impact Angle ≈ 45.0 degrees
