How to Use the Unit Rate Calculator
- Enter the Total Quantity in the first input field. This is the total amount you want to calculate the unit rate for.
- Enter the Total Units in the second input field. This is the number of units that correspond to the total quantity.
- Optionally, enter a Unit Label in the third input field to identify what the unit rate represents (e.g., "miles," "kg," "hours").
- Click the Calculate button to compute the unit rate.
- The result will be displayed in the result area, showing how many units of quantity per single unit of measure.
Principle and Formula
The Unit Rate is a special type of ratio where the second term is equal to 1. It represents the amount of one quantity per unit of another quantity.
The formula used is:
Unit Rate = Total Quantity ÷ Total Units
For example, if you drove 150 miles in 3 hours, the unit rate (speed) would be 150 miles ÷ 3 hours = 50 miles per hour.
Examples of Unit Rate Calculations
- Speed: Distance traveled divided by time taken (miles per hour, km per hour)
- Price: Total cost divided by number of items (dollars per item, euros per kilogram)
- Flow Rate: Volume of liquid passing through per unit time (gallons per minute, liters per second)
- Population Density: Population divided by area (people per square mile, people per square kilometer)
