Understanding Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)

Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) is an average blood pressure during one cardiac cycle. It is a better measure of organ perfusion than either systolic or diastolic pressure alone. The formula to calculate MAP is:

MAP = (Systolic BP + 2 * Diastolic BP) / 3

This formula weights the diastolic pressure twice as much as the systolic pressure because the blood pressure is closer to diastolic pressure during most of the cardiac cycle.
