Understanding the Dosage

Metacam (meloxicam) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce pain and inflammation in cats. The standard dose is 0.1 mg per kilogram of body weight, administered once daily.

The calculator adjusts the dosage based on your cat's body condition:

  • Underweight: Slightly higher dose (1.2× standard) to ensure adequate pain relief.
  • Overweight/Obese: Slightly lower dose (0.8× standard) to minimize potential gastrointestinal side effects.

Important Considerations

  • This calculator provides general dosage recommendations only. Always consult with your veterinarian before starting any new medication.
  • Metacam should not be used in cats with kidney or liver disease, gastrointestinal ulcers, or those who are pregnant or nursing.
  • Monitor your cat for any signs of adverse reactions, including vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or lethargy.
  • The treatment duration should not exceed 14 days unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.

How to Administer

Metacam is available in flavored soft gelatin capsules that can be easily hidden in food or administered directly to your cat. The medication should be given once daily, with or without food, at approximately the same time each day for best results.
