How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the velocity of Object 1 in meters per second (m/s).
  2. Select the direction of Object 1's movement (same or opposite direction relative to Object 2).
  3. Enter the velocity of Object 2 in meters per second (m/s).
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the relative velocity.
  5. The result will be displayed in meters per second (m/s).

Understanding Relative Velocity

Relative velocity is the velocity of an object or observer with respect to another object or observer. It is calculated by subtracting the velocity of the observer from the velocity of the object.

In the same direction, the relative velocity is the absolute difference between the two velocities. In the opposite direction, the relative velocity is the sum of the two velocities.

Formula

For objects moving in the same direction: Relative Velocity = |v1 - v2|

For objects moving in opposite directions: Relative Velocity = |v1 + v2|

Where:

  • v1 is the velocity of Object 1
  • v2 is the velocity of Object 2
