Fret distance calculator

This calculator can be used to determine the distance between frets on a guitar or other stringed instrument based on the scale length and the number of frets.

Input Parameters

Calculation Results

Calculation Formula

Fret distance = Scale Length / (Number of Frets + 1)

Where:
Scale Length: The length of the string from the nut to the bridge.
Number of Frets: The total number of frets on the instrument.

Result

Fret distance will be displayed here after calculation.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the scale length of your instrument in either inches or centimeters.
  2. Enter the total number of frets on your instrument.
  3. Select the unit of measurement (inches or centimeters).
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to compute the fret distance.
  5. The result will be displayed in the corresponding unit.

Understanding the Formula

The calculator uses the formula:

Fret distance = Scale Length / (Number of Frets + 1)

This formula is based on the standard method for calculating the distance between frets on a stringed instrument. The distance between each fret is determined by dividing the scale length by the number of intervals (frets + 1).

Example

If you have a guitar with a scale length of 25.5 inches and 20 frets:

Fret distance = 25.5 / (20 + 1) = 1.2272 inches

This means each fret is spaced approximately 1.2272 inches apart on your guitar.
