Calculate your insulin to carb ratio to manage your blood sugar levels effectively when eating carbohydrates
Learn how to use the Insulin to Carb Ratio Calculator to manage your diabetes effectively
The Insulin to Carb Ratio (ICR) is a measure that helps people with diabetes determine how many carbohydrates affect their blood sugar levels. It's calculated by dividing the number of insulin units by the grams of carbohydrates consumed.
If you plan to eat 30 grams of carbohydrates and take 5 units of insulin, your ICR would be:
5 units / 30 grams = 0.17 units per gram
This means that for every gram of carbohydrate you eat, your blood sugar will increase by approximately 0.17 units.
Once you know your ICR, you can use it to calculate how much insulin to take before meals. For example, if your ICR is 0.17 and you plan to eat 60 grams of carbohydrates, you would take:
60 grams × 0.17 units/gram = 10.2 units of insulin
