Understanding Efficiency

Efficiency is a measure of how well energy is converted from one form to another. It is expressed as a percentage and calculated as:

Efficiency = (Output Energy / Input Energy) × 100%

An efficiency of 100% means that all input energy is converted to useful output energy, while an efficiency below 100% indicates energy losses (typically as heat, noise, or other forms of waste energy).

Example Usage

If a light bulb consumes 60 Watts of power and produces 240 Joules of light energy in one second, its efficiency would be calculated as:

  1. Input Power = 60 W
  2. Output Energy = 240 J
  3. Input Energy = 60 W × 1 s = 60 J
  4. Efficiency = (240 J / 60 J) × 100% = 400%

Note: In real-world scenarios, efficiency below 100% is expected due to energy losses. An efficiency above 100% would indicate an error in measurement or calculation.
