Calculation Formula

Total Lumens = Room Area (sq ft) × Desired Lumens per Square Foot

Where:
Room Area (sq ft) = Room Width (feet) × Room Length (feet)
Desired Lumens per Square Foot is the light level you want to achieve.

Learn how to use the Lumens per room calculator calculator and its working principles

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the width of your room in feet.
  2. Enter the length of your room in feet.
  3. Enter the desired lumens per square foot. This value depends on the room's purpose:
    • Very dim (e.g., library): 5-10 lumens per square foot
    • Dim (e.g., bedroom): 10-20 lumens per square foot
    • Normal (e.g., living room): 20-40 lumens per square foot
    • Bright (e.g., kitchen): 40-70 lumens per square foot
    • Very bright (e.g., workshop): 70-100 lumens per square foot
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to determine the total lumens required.
  5. The result will show the total lumens needed for your room.

Example

If you have a living room that is 12 feet wide and 15 feet long, and you want a normal brightness of 30 lumens per square foot, the calculation would be:

Room Area = 12 feet × 15 feet = 180 square feet

Total Lumens = 180 square feet × 30 lumens per square foot = 5400 lumens

In this case, you would need a lighting solution that provides approximately 5400 lumens.
