Understanding Stride Length

Stride length is the distance between the heel strike of one foot to the heel strike of the same foot. It is different from step length, which is the distance between the heel strike of one foot to the heel strike of the other foot. For a more accurate calculation, you can measure your own stride length by walking a known distance and dividing that distance by the number of steps you took.

Example

If you walked 10000 steps and your average stride length is 2.5 feet, the calculation would be:

10000 steps × 2.5 feet/step ÷ 5280 feet/mile = 4.71 miles
