Frequency to FM Channel Number Converter

Convert FM radio frequencies (in MHz) to channel numbers based on the North American FM band plan (88-108 MHz).

Input Parameters

Enter the FM frequency in megahertz (MHz) between 88.0 and 108.0 MHz

Calculation Results

Calculation Formula

Channel Number = ⌊(Frequency - 88) × 100⌋

Where:
Frequency = FM radio frequency in MHz
Channel Number = FM channel number in the North American band plan

Learn how to use the Frequency to FM Channel Number Converter calculator and its working principles

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the FM radio frequency in megahertz (MHz) between 88.0 and 108.0 MHz in the input field.
  2. Click the "Calculate" button to convert the frequency to the corresponding FM channel number.
  3. The calculator will display the channel number and the range of channels that this frequency falls within.

Working Principle

The North American FM band is divided into 100 channels, each spanning 200 kHz (0.2 MHz). The calculation is based on the formula:

Channel Number = ⌊(Frequency - 88) × 100⌋

This formula works by first normalizing the frequency range (88-108 MHz) to a 0-20 scale, then rounding down to the nearest whole number.

Example

For an FM frequency of 98.1 MHz:

Channel Number = ⌊(98.1 - 88) × 100⌋ = ⌊(10.1 × 100)⌋ = ⌊1010⌋ = 1010

This corresponds to channel number 1010, which falls in the range 101-108.

Limitations

This calculator uses the North American FM band plan (88.0-108.0 MHz). It does not account for different band plans used in other countries.
