Calculation Formula

Chargeable Weight = max(Actual Weight, Volumetric Weight)

Where:
Volumetric Weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000
Chargeable Weight is the greater of Actual Weight or Volumetric Weight

Chargeable Weight Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Chargeable Weight Calculator and understand shipping weight calculations

What is Chargeable Weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight used to calculate shipping costs. Carriers typically use the greater of the actual package weight (what the package weighs) or the volumetric weight (what the package *appears* to weigh based on its dimensions).

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the actual weight of your package in kilograms (kg)
  2. Enter the dimensions of your package (length, width, and height) in centimeters (cm)
  3. Click the "Calculate" button
  4. The calculator will display both the volumetric weight and the chargeable weight

Understanding Volumetric Weight

Volumetric weight is calculated to account for the space a package occupies in transport. Packages that are large but light can sometimes be charged based on their volume rather than their actual weight.

The formula used in this calculator is:

Volumetric Weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000

Why is This Important?

Using the correct chargeable weight ensures you're not overpaying or underpaying for shipping. Most carriers will charge based on the greater of actual or volumetric weight:

  • If the actual weight is greater than the volumetric weight, you'll be charged based on the actual weight
  • If the volumetric weight is greater than the actual weight, you'll be charged based on the volumetric weight
