Hiking Rate Calculator Calculator Usage Guide

Learn how to use the Hiking Rate Calculator and understand its outputs

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the total distance of your hike in kilometers (km).
  2. Enter the total time you spent hiking in hours (h). For more accuracy, include minutes as decimals (e.g., 1.5 hours).
  3. Enter the total elevation gain of your hike in meters (m).
  4. Click the "Calculate" button to see your hiking rate and other metrics.
  5. Use the "Reset" button to clear all inputs and start over.

Understanding the Results

  • Hiking Rate (km/h): This is your average speed during the hike. A typical hiking pace is 3-5 km/h.
  • Pace (min/km): This is the time it takes you to hike one kilometer. A typical hiking pace is 15-20 min/km.
  • Elevation Gain (m): The total meters of vertical climb during your hike.
  • Calories Estimate: An approximate number of calories burned during your hike. This estimate assumes an average body weight and hiking intensity.

Principles of the Calculation

The calculator uses the basic formula:

Hiking Rate (km/h) = Distance (km) / Time (h)

The pace is calculated as:

Pace (min/km) = Time (h) / Distance (km) * 60

The calorie estimate is a rough approximation based on hiking rate and duration.
