What is Market Capitalization?

Market capitalization (often called "market cap") is the total dollar value of a company's outstanding shares of stock. It represents the public's valuation of a company and is used to determine the company's size, potential investment value, and to compare companies within the same industry.

Example Calculation

For example, if a company has a stock price of $50 and 10 million outstanding shares, the market capitalization would be:

$50 × 10,000,000 = $500,000,000 (or $500 million)

Important Notes

  • Market capitalization fluctuates based on stock price changes
  • This calculator uses basic market cap calculation without considering diluted shares
  • Market cap is just one metric to evaluate a company's value
