Understanding Dog Years

Dog years are not equivalent to human years. While a dog reaches the equivalent of human adolescence around 1 year old, the aging process continues at different rates depending on the dog's size and breed.

The calculation used in this calculator is based on research by veterinary scientists that different dog breeds age at different rates:

  • Small breeds (up to 20 pounds) tend to live longer and mature more slowly.
  • Medium breeds (21-50 pounds) mature at a rate somewhere between small and large breeds.
  • Large breeds (51-90 pounds) tend to have a shorter lifespan and mature more quickly.
  • Giant breeds (over 90 pounds) have the shortest lifespans and mature very quickly.

It's important to note that these are general guidelines, and individual dogs may vary based on genetics, health, diet, and lifestyle.
