How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the area you want to cover in square feet (e.g., for a 10' × 20' area, enter 200).
- Enter the desired depth of the crush and run material in inches (e.g., 3 inches for a 3-inch layer).
- Enter the material density in pounds per cubic yard (common densities range from 100-160 lbs/cu yd for crushed stone).
- Click the "Calculate" button to get the volume in cubic yards and the estimated weight in tons.
Understanding the Results
The calculator provides two key results:
- Volume (Cubic Yards): The amount of material needed in cubic yards.
- Weight (Tons): The estimated weight of the material needed in tons.
Example Calculation
For a 500 sq ft area with a 4-inch depth of crush and run material with a density of 120 lbs/cu yd:
- Volume = 500 sq ft × 4 in × 0.0037 = 7.4 cubic yards
- Weight = 7.4 cu yd × 120 lbs/cu yd ÷ 2000 = 0.444 tons
Practical Tips
- It's recommended to add about 10-15% extra material to account for compaction and waste.
- Always verify material densities with your supplier, as they can vary based on the specific material.
- For larger projects, consider consulting with a civil engineer or construction professional.
